Scarecrow Competition - 2011

The theme was Nursery Rhymes & Fairytales

Report by Emma Hrubiak, competition organiser

"There were 14 entries in the Tansley Scarecrow competition this year – this was a little disappointing. However, the standard is extremely high. On Monday evening the judges viewed all the scarecrows and eventually, after much discussion, came to some difficult decisions. Because the standard was so high, it was too difficult for the judges to choose between the scarecrows. Therefore, the judges decided to award nine prizes in total and have each contributed to the prize fund to make this possible. Each of the nine prize winners will receive a £5 garden gift voucher. In addition the two joint 1st prize winners will share the Craig Hardy Memorial Trophy for the year.

Equal 1st Prize
12. Harry Parker, 23 The Knoll
11. Mrs Saunders & Ellie, 27 The Knoll

Equal 2nd Prize
14. Val Wildgoose, Heatherfield Lodge, Lant Lane
 6. Janet Baranowski, Sunningdale, Tansley House Gardens
 1. Neil & Sarah Green, The Homestead, Nottingham Road

Equal 3rd Prize
 8. The Spencer family, 5 Tansley House Gardens
 9. Janet and Geoff Lewis, 6 Oak Tree Gardens

Judges’ Special Awards
 5. Tansley Preschool, Tansley Community Hall
10. Rebecca Fletcher, Burnhill, Church Street

As in previous years, the judges were as follows: Local Artist, Polly Morten, Local Sculptor, Stuart Marsh, Lifelong Tansley resident, Margaret Fearn. A big ‘Thank You’ to them for their time and enthusiasm and their contribution to the prize fund.

Well done to everyone who entered! A lot of time, care and creativity has gone into all the scarecrows."

Although the number of entries this year was a little disappointing, 15 when before we had 30 or more, the standard was extremely high. The three local judges, artist Polly Morten, sculptor Stuart Marsh and lifelong resident of Tansley Margaret Fearn, had some very difficult decisions to make but they do have a robust scoring system to make it fair. Thanks very much to them.
