Race report by Barry Mosley

After a day of rain on Wednesday and a damp start on Thursday, the weather gradually improved and the race took place in almost perfect conditions on a sunny evening, 92 runners taking part. Three runners vied for first place, Chris Patterson from Ashbourne RC coming out on top in 26mins 45secs, followed closely by last year’s winner Ben Cartwright and Zak Hodgkinson of Matlock AC. First lady was current record holder Christine Howard of Matlock AC with a time of 32mins 11secs. Veteran categories winners were Dean Taylor (V40), Katy Busfield (FV40), Tim Clayton (V50), Emily Sanders (FV50), Mick Moorhouse (V60), Jan Forrester (FV50) and Clive Russell (V70). Junior winners were Ed Hoon and Holly Hutchings. Local winners were Peter Wilmot, Alice Spencer, Dave Jones and Angela Colmar. Thanks go to our local sponsors who donated prizes. They are Matlock Garden Centre, Scotland Nurseries, Neil Thompson Nurseries, and last but not least Palins Fruit & Veg, who have provided us with prizes for quite a few years. Thanks also to all our helpers, especially Ruth Cooper and Ian Spencer. Ruth’s organisation and Ian’s computer skills made the event work successfully.

Race report by Barry Mosley

What a difference the weather makes. Last year it rained all day, but this year the sun shone as 83 runners set off on the 4.3 mile course. Our race has a reputation for being a fast one, and this year was no exception. A terrific performance by winner Ben Cartwright saw him complete the course in 25 minutes 59 seconds, only 13 seconds outside Joel Stevens’s record. Ben’s win was so emphatic that the second man, Edward James was almost two minutes behind. Third was Colin Davenport.

First lady was EvaTaylor finishing in 34 minutes 35 seconds. Age category winners were Alan Pickering, Gale Gamble, Andy Whittaker, Lynda Howard, Simon Brister, and Angela Bent. Local winners were Peter Wilmot, Alice Spencer, Lance Philpott and Sue Allen.

Thanks go to all who helped with marshalling, registration and at the finish, and especially Ruth Cooper, without whose organisation the event would not have been such a success.

Race report by Barry Mosley

Having had good weather for our nine previous hill races, I suppose we were due for a change and we certainly got it! Sixty-four stalwarts braved the dreadful weather and the conditions under foot. Parts of the course were quite difficult, including the stepping stones at the top of Lumsdale which had disappeared under water. Despite all this, everyone got back safely. As usual we were well supported by Matlock A C who make this race part of their Grande Prix.

The winner was Ben Cartwright, second was Dean Taylor (Ripley), third was Austin Frost (Dark Peak F R). First lady was Lucy Holmes (Ripley RC). Age category winners were as follows: 1st veteran over 40 was Alan Billington (Belper). 1st lady vet. 40 was Jackie Keasley (Helsby R C). 1st vet. 50 was Andrew Moore (Dark Peak F R). 1st Lady vet. 50 was Mandy Moore (Totley A C). 1st vet. 60 was Mick Moorhouse (Matlock A C ). 1st vet. 70 was Clive Russell (Matlock A C). Local category winners were as follows: 1st Local man was Peter Wilmot. 1st local lady was Alice Spencer. 1st local man vet. was Andy Cameron. 1st local lady vet. was Angela Colmar. 1st junior was Deborah Greer.

Thanks to the runners for taking part on such an awful evening. Thanks to the marshalls who stood in the rain at their posts, to the people at the finish who helped with time keeping, registration and results, but most of all to Ruth Cooper who makes this event work.

Here are some more photos of competitors in relative finishing order [provided by Ruth Cooper].

Race report by Barry Mosley

Once again the weather was kind to us and the race took place in near perfect conditions. The race record had stood for the last five years but it was broken in fine style by 21-year-old Joel Stevens from Wirksworth R.C who reduced it by a whole 25 seconds, returning a time of 25 minutes 46 seconds. Second was 15-year-old England Junior Kristian Edwards from Tamworth A.C. – last year’s winner. Third was vet.50 Mick Stenton from Dark Peak Fell Runners. Mick has taken part every year that the race has been in existence, except for one year when he was injured, and even then he turned out as a spectator! First lady was Jenny Reed from Matlock A.C. in a time of 31:17, followed by Sandy Grimes from Wirksworth R.C. in 34:13. Category winners were Alan Pickering, Julie Goodwin, Mike Wallis, Neville Boler, Christine Middleton and juniors Alice Spencer and Josh Fern. As usual we had a fair number of Tansley runners, winners being Ben Cartwright, Sue Allen, Peter Wilmot and Angela Colmar. In total, there were 120 runners, 119 of whom finished the race. Presentations were made at the ever-popular après-race gathering at The Gate, where contestants and helpers enjoyed drinks and a barbecue.
